The employee pays own training and education (5/13/2009)

The employee pays extra training and education out of own pocket

More and more employees are now seeking extra education and training to keep their job during these difficult economical times. More often than in the past, they are paying this out of their own pockets in order to secure their position within the company. This information is the result of research conducted by a Dutch educational institution of 3000 students, during which they researched students’ motivation for gaining extra education before and during the economical crisis.

While more employees are seeking this, employers are less prepared to pay for extra education or training nowadays.  60% of employers who are still paying for extra education or training, say that the main reason for continuing to provide this is to improve the position of current employees.  More now than in the past, an extra education will achieve the goal of a fast career move.

What is remarkable is that applications for the training “How to Invest Yourself” have doubled during the economical crisis.  Jan Jelle Bouma of the LOI Educational Institution claims that people want to know why they have lost money and how they can protect their pension funds.   It is also interesting to note that most people who are applying for extra courses come out of the financial sector. Says Bouma, “Students show that they want to take their career future into [their] own hands. That the employer is less motivated as before to help financially, they don’t mind that much. They find it useful to invest in their own knowledge.”
