San Francisco is a world class city, acting as the center piece of the appropriately named “San Francisco Bay Area”. With all of the typical amenities you would expect in a city of its caliber, like restaurants of every kind, shopping of equal or even better quality, the city is uniquely historic as well. Founded all the way back in 1776, San Francisco is among the oldest west coast cities in America, and it shows in their classic style of architecture. One of the most famous attractions in San Francisco, and the only moving U.S. National Historic Landmark, are the San Francisco Cable Cars, which double as both a landmark and a handy way of getting around the city! Other world famous attractions include Alcatraz Island, Fisherman’s Wharf, and The Golden Gate Bridge along with Golden Gate Park, Chinatown, Union Square, The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the Ghirardelli Chocolate Factory, among many others! Below is a list of some of the exciting things that San Francisco has to offer you, plus links where you can find out more information about specifics.
Gerald H. for Yelp: “Still the best steakhouse in San Francisco! The cuts of meat are fantastic and they have authentic Japanese wagyu A5 steak. Excellent service as always with a timeless restaurant decor. Save room for cotton candy.”
Alberto H. for Yelp: “Alexander's Steak house is Fantastic. We went to this amazing steak house the last time we were in San Fransisco and we absolutely loved it. The decor was wonderful and hip, the service was awesome, and most importantly the food was absolutely magnificent. We can't wait to go back to San Francisco to go again. Wonderful experience.”
Housing in San Francisco is very expensive and it is recommended that you start reviewing housing in the area prior to your arrival. The average one bedroom apartment starts around $3000 per month, unfurnished, not including utilities. Keep in mind without any credit it the USA you will need to pay first and last month rent as a deposit. It is advised as a J-1 exchange visitor that you look into options of sharing housing with other locals and/or J-1 exchange visitors. By doing so, you can reduce the costs per month to around $1500.
San Francisco is a very hilly city, so walking can be a bit challenging if you are not using public transportation. That being said, it is entirely possible to walk around the city and get around completely fine.
San Francisco's climate is characteristic of the cool-summer Mediterranean climate of California's coast, with moist mild winters and dry summers.
