Local attractions

The D.C. area is home to a tremendous number of cultural activities to do, especially with regards to history, both nationally and worldwide! World famous for its historical monuments and cultural landmarks, there are very few cities in The United States that compare in terms of the number of iconic places to see! See here for climate info.

Transportation: Depending on the location of your housing, a car may not be necessary while living in D.C. The D.C. metro access across the D.C. area is quite convenient making travel around the city fairly easy. It is recommended that you get metro passes as soon as you can once in D.C. Also, it is important to note that the D.C. metro uses a sliding scale system regarding the cost of their metro, meaning that the further you travel on the metro the more expensive the trip will be. That means it is especially important to consider the location of your housing compared to where the hotel is.

Housing: Washington DC Metro area, and the surrounding areas like Alexandria and Arlington, is expensive. A 1-bedroom apartment can start around $1,800+ per month, unfurnished. HRC places over 30 J1's in D.C. every year so there are plenty of other J1's to help you get settled in the area! We recommend that you consider rooming with another J-1 or local share the cost of the living. The metro is very reliable, which allows the option to live outside the city where the cost of living will be a bit less expensive. Please note, without established credit your first and last month’s rent may be required as a deposit. HRC recommends you arrive with at least $2,500 as startup capital and to help secure housing. See here for housing options: i5 Union Market, Apartments, Zillow, Trulia, Hotpads, ForRent

Local Attractions: Lincoln memorial, The White House, The Washington Monument, The Jefferson Memorial, The Capital Building, The Smithsonian Air and Space Museum, The Smithsonian, The Library of Congress, The National Gallery of Art.
