Rate of Pay - $16.00/hour
Uniform will be provided (hat, jacket, and apron). Candidates will need to bring their own pants/shoes. Candidates will also need to bring their own knives.
One complimentary meal per shift.
Vacation/PTO will begin to accrue from the start of the program. After 90 days of employment, there are eligible for for up to 3 weeks in PTO/Vacation time.
The hotel will arrange pickup for the candidate upon arrival and will house the candidate for the first 14 days of their program until they secure more permanent housing.
There is no reliable transportation. Therefore, you will need to purchase a car/ moped or a bike upon your arrival. You should be prepared to bring at least $2000 for a used car. You will also need to have a driver’s license before you arrive; otherwise, to take the California Drivers Test, will take at least 8 weeks to complete. You can utilize a bike to travel aprox 2 miles from the resort to the staff housing.
Staff housing is offered for the cooks; a 4-bedroom home that will be double occupancy in the primary bedroom – has its own bath that is shared with the roommate. Then the other 3 rooms would be single occupancy with one shared bathroom. Has a shared kitchen and living room. $225 per week/$900 per month – includes utilities.
Napa Valley is a stunning region located in Northern California. Though it is famous for its wine production, the region has so much more to offer. With countless trails to explore, Napa Valley is a beautiful place for nature lovers of all sorts. From stunning vistas, to adorable downtown area, Napa has something for everyone! Of course amongst all of the charm and class that the town exudes, Napa is most famous for its world famous wine production! Explore countless vineyards and winetasting opportunities around and outside of the town! As of May 2022, housing is offered on a first come first available basis. Cost is $200 for a private room and $150 for a shared room, based on availability. You will share a bedroom and bath in a 3 or 4 bedroom house.
The average one bedroom apartment in Napa, California costs around $2,000 a month. It is recommended that candidates reach out to other J1s in the area so they can try to find housing with one of them to help lower the cost of their monthly housing. Please note, without established credit your first and last month’s rent may be required as a deposit. HRC recommends you arrive with at least $3,000 as startup capital and to help secure housing. You must have your international drivers license.
Travel around Napa Valley can be challenging depending on where you are living. It is entirely possible that you may need a car during your time here. Remember to consider the cost of purchasing a vehicle and vehicle insurance. On average, a J-1 participant can expect to pay upwards of $400 on a used car payment per month and $150.00 per month for vehicle insurance.
That being said, there is a modest bus system that goes around Napa called The VINE. A link to the VINE website is provided below.
This region of northern-California is famous for its fairly mild year round climate, featuring summers usually in the mid to high 70s°F (mid 20°C) and winters often in the range of the high 50s°F to lower 60s°F (mid 10°C). Rainfall in the region is almost non-existent during the summer time, but it makes up for it in the winter months, causing Napa Valley to get around 20 inches (51.8 mm) of rain annually.
