Local attractions

The D.C. area is home to a tremendous number of cultural activities to do, especially with regards to history, both nationally and worldwide! World famous for its historical monuments and cultural landmarks, there are very few cities in The United States that compare in terms of the number of iconic places to see! Just a handful of some of these places include The Washington Monument, The Lincoln Memorial, The White House, The Library of Congress, The Capitol Building, The Jefferson Memorial, The Smithsonian, and The National Gallery of Art.

Housing:

Washington DC Metro area, and the surrounding areas like Alexandria and Arlington, is expensive. A 1-bedroom apartment can start around $1,800+ per month, unfurnished.

HRC places over 30 J1's in D.C. every year so there are plenty of other J1's to help you get settled in the area!

We recommend that you consider rooming with another J-1 or local share the cost of the living. The metro is very reliable, which allows the option to live outside the city where the cost of living will be a bit less expensive. Please note, without established credit your first and last month’s rent may be required as a deposit. HRC recommends you arrive with at least $2,500 as startup capital and to help secure housing.
