Housing:
Dallas/Plano is affordable in town but on the outskirts it is not. The average apartment starts around $1,400 per month for a studio.
Keep in mind without any credit it the USA you will need to pay first and last month rent as a deposit. It is advised as a J-1 exchange visitor that you look into options of sharing housing with other locals and/or J-1 exchange visitors. By doing so, you can reduce the costs per month to around $800.
Visit the following housing options:
Transportation:
While there is public transportation, accessibility is limited. We recommend to purchase a vehicle, and if you do, HTP suggests that you bring an additional $5,000 to accommodate the costs associated with purchasing both the vehicle and vehicle insurance.
Check out: DART Transportation for more information!
Climate:
The beautiful city of Dallas has a humid, hot climate and is often prone to storms, though it is located in a region that also tends to receive warm, dry winds from the north and west in the summer, bringing temperatures about 102 °F (39 °C) at times. On the other hand, daytime highs above 65 °F (18 °C) are not unusual during the winter season. Spring and autumn bring pleasant weather to the area. Springtime weather can be quite volatile, but temperatures themselves are mild. The weather in Dallas is also generally pleasant between late September and early December, and unlike springtime, major storms rarely form in the area.
Summers are hot, with temperatures approaching those of desert and semi desert locations of similar latitude.
